Winter tyres - for a save driving on snow and ice.
The "M + S" (or M & S, MS) marking can currently be found on winter and all season tyres. Besides this marking, a snowflake symbol can be found on some models. The M + S tyres that have the snowflake symbol meet the higher quality standards. Since 2011, winter tyres are mandatory in Ireland. Having a special blend of rubber that resists to low temperatures, these tyres are more adapted to winter conditions than the summer tyres. Therefore, the car will have a good grip even dealing with low temperatures. The optimised profile reduces the risk of hydroplaning and provides a good grip in snowy and icy conditions. The larger grooves and the additional blades improve stability when switching from snow to wet and to dry road conditions. We have winter tyres suitable for your car. Identify the size of your tyre
The exact dimensions of a tyre can be found on the sidewall printed mark. The graphic shows how to read properties and dimensions of the tyre:

SPEED INDEX:
The speed index indicates the maximum speed intended for the tyre. Up to this value, the manufacturer guarantees optimum operation with the appropriate tyre pressure. The maximum speed allowed for this vehicle is given in the vehicle owner's manual; this information can be used to select the appropriate speed index for the tyre. The speed index is the last mark on the sidewall of the tyre.
 
Load Index
Permissible maximum axle load per tyre in kg. To be found in the registration certificate or vehicle registration document or read directly from the tyre (two-digit number). It is permitted to fit a tyre with a higher load index.
 
Driving safety despite puncture
Runflat tyres are puncture-resistant tyres with reinforced sidewalls. This creates the so-called run-flat property. In the event of damage, this allows the vehicle to continue driving up to a distance of approx. 100 km (and even beyond depending on the product) at a maximum speed of 80 km/h, even if the pressure has been completely lost. Run-flat tyres even prevent the tyre rubber from jumping off the rim in the event of a loss of air pressure. A flat tyre is therefore still a flat tyre, but it loses some of its drama. Note: All run-flat tyres are marked with the symbol "RSC" (Runflat System Component) and may only be fitted in vehicles with a functioning air pressure control system!
 
Tyres with increased load capacity
Reinforced tyres are designed for higher loads than normal tyres. They can be identified by the designation 'RF' (reinforced) or also 'XL' or 'Extra Load'. They are used on vans, minibuses, off-road vehicles, etc. However, their mounting alone does not automatically result in higher load capacity but also requires a correspondingly higher air pressure. Furthermore, the load capacity index specified in the vehicle documents continues to apply.
 
Tyres with extra high load capacity
The "C" in the term C tyres stands for "commercial". These tyres are specially designed for commercial vehicles. These can be, for example, lighter trucks, delivery vans, flatbed trucks or panel vans. In other words: vehicles that have to move higher loads at a comparatively lower speed. The multi-ply reinforced C tyres are therefore even more load-bearing than reinforced tyres.
 
Mobility-optimised tyres
A tyre with a sealing layer on the opposite side of the tyre tread. In the event of a puncture (e.g. by a nail), this layer blocks any loss of air, even if the foreign body causing the puncture is still in the tyre. It is not necessary to stop or change the tyres immediately at the roadside.

Original equipment quality: optimum adjustment to the vehicle
Tyres with a special OEM marking on the sidewall, e.g. "MO" for Mercedes-Benz, were developed in cooperation with a specific car manufacturer and the tyre industry. These tyres have been homologated by the vehicle manufacturer and are a perfect match for a specific model. They have been specially designed to highlight or further improve the performance characteristics of the car in question, thus representing the culmination of a state-of-the-art fine-tuning process that perfectly complements the latest technological developments in the automotive industry. I have done a lot of driving on these tyres on snow and ice. I have had other tyres that were slightly better on soft snow, but they still did the job. They were outstanding though on icy roads and on compacted snow. You obviously still need to drive for the conditions, but these are great, especially bearing in mind their reasonable price. I will definitely look to buy these again

We have had winter tyres fitted to our main family car for the last 8 years and are total converts to their benefits. This was the first year I have worked as a chauffeur and didn&#39;t hesitate to have them fitted. All Mercedes vehicles wear tyres out in certain areas before the whole tyre is ready for replacement, due to their steering geometry settings. The winter tyres have outlasted the &#39;summer&#39; tyres in this aspect and are still fitted to the vehicle despite temperatures now remaining above the optimum seven degrees. I totally recommend these tyres and will have them fitted next winter.

That aside, these tyres give extra confidence on snow and cold wet roads, but once the temperature starts to increase in Spring, there is the usual drop off of performance - as expected. Just switched back to Summer tyres after the second season with these Goodyears, and still 7 to 8mm tread depth left - more than you get with some NEW tyres.

My car is the 90Hp 1.6TDI, CAYB engine and 5 speed transmission. I return on average 65mpg with these Fulda winter tyres on - no drop off from the summers [they were not good summers that came off it]. I drive on UK A and B roads in Shropshire, Herefordshire which are very agricultural with lots of pot holes. I killed a Fulda front tyre in 100 miles as I missed a huge pot hole at night at 50mph, the tyre did not burst but it egged - luckily I bought 6 tyres expecting a problem as the roads are horrendous and the tyres 40 series so too low profile for where I live. I drive to purposely avoid pot holes, but still catch them - the tyres and rims have survived unscathed since. I suspect they are slightly noisier than the summer but only on some road surfaces. Grip is very good in wet and predictable in the dry - not an ultimate grip tyre BUT here is my point, it appears to me on a very low power and lightweight car [1,200kg] to provide very consistent grip regardless of road surface which is what I want. Great grip in wet mud and standing water also. I would recommend for a good general tyre. I&#39;ve done about 5,000 miles on them so far and wear even at 10degC is fine.

Although a &quot;Winter&quot; tyre they are a good all rounder mud &amp; snow. Tyre wear is obviously not as good &quot;summer&quot; tyres and other tyres may be better for high speed autoroute driving.

Durable winter tyres

In winter conditions, winter tyres are clearly superior to classic summer tyres. That's because they are perfectly tuned to the cold season. Thus, the material mixture used for low temperatures, as they are typical for the winter months, are optimized.

Winter tyres are currently not mandatory in Britain. Traditionally, they have been regarded as specialised snow tyres, and snowy winters are less common in the UK than in other parts of Europe. However, most modern products of this class are actually best described as cold weather tyres and are designed to work effectively in all road conditions at low temperatures.

Proven superiority of winter tyres

Numerous tests have been performed by manufacturers and prestigious independent organisations - such as ‘Auto Express’ magazine, one of the biggest supporters of winter tyres in the UK – in cold dry and wet conditions, as well as on ice, slush, and snow. The conclusion is that modern studless winter tyres are far superior to summer tyres even on wet roads when temperatures drop below 7°C.

Also, on snow, ice, or when temperatures are lower than -5°C, these cold weather tyres are clearly superior to the all-season rubber of similar quality. Please note, however, that using studded tyres with metal studs on public roads is illegal in Britain.

Why are cold weather tyres a great choice for the cold season?

TyreSafe, one of the UK’s leading tyre safety organisations, is an active advocate of winter tyres. They point out that, although damp roads may look similar in warm and cold weather, true cold weather tyres perform much better in such conditions at low temperatures. The broad consensus among experts is that winter tyres are the best choice for the cold season, even when snow is not a common issue – and especially when it is!

Advanced technology

Cold weather tyre technology has advanced considerably from the times when such products mainly relied on studs for better grip on frozen surfaces. Today’s winter tyres employ advanced rubber compound formulas with higher natural rubber and silica content. These prevent hardening at low temperatures, ensuring superior grip and load management.

Aquaplaning resistance

A special, more open tread pattern is also important for adequate traction and control on ice, snow, or slush. Winter tyre treads display aggressive-looking arrays of wide grooves, sipes, and micro-sipes that allow them to keep their footing on the snow. The open treads are also effective at resisting aquaplaning, as they can easily move out of the way large quantities of fluid.

Should you fit only two winter tyres on your vehicle?

Many people wonder if it is better to fit two or all four winter tyres on the vehicle. And the answer is it is always better to buy winter tyres in a set of four than in a pair and fit them on front wheels only. This is due to the fact that if you fit two different sets to the front and rear of your car you will have the impression that the car wants to turn about, hence increasing the risk of losing the stability and the balance of your vehicle.On the other hand, if you fit only two winter tyres to the rear, you will go through the same occurrence of imbalance between your wheels and you may end up losing the control of your vehicle and very likely get under-steer. In other words, your vehicle will keep moving in spite of your corrective actions.
